National Night Out (NNO) kicks off Tuesday evening, August 2.
Celebrated the first Tuesday in August, NNO encourages residents to get to know their neighbors by holding block parties, with the goal of increasing community awareness and aiding in crime prevention. The event is also promoted as a way to improve police-community relations — a very timely issue considering the civil unrest across the nation over recent police shootings.
As in previous years, Minneapolis was ranked #1 in 2015 for most registered NNO events for U.S. cities with a population over 300,000. St. Paul wasn’t too far behind at #4 for cities with a population between 100,000 — 300,000, according to the National Association of Town Watch.
Is your block or community celebrating National Night Out this year? If so, please share your photos with the MSR by sending them to msrnewsonline@spokesman-recorder.com!
If your community isn’t participating this year, feel free to stop by and say hello to some of the friendly MN Spokesman-Recorder staff and volunteers who will be out at 36th Street & Portland Avenue block party. Free hot dogs while supplies last.
