Bertha Mae Johnson Smith

February 12, 1920 — April 18, 2014

Bertha Mae Johnson Smith passed away peacefully at the golden age of 94 on Good Friday, April 18, 2014. Bertha was the first African American school teacher in the Minneapolis Public School District. She was a dedicated educator and was active in her community until her health failed her. Sister Bertha Smith was born on February 12, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa. When she was five years old, her mother died and she and her siblings were left in the temporary care of a White family before moving to North Minneapolis with her grandmother and father. In memory of three great men

We lost three individuals this April; I personally didn’t know each of them, but came close to meeting one of them. Charles Sumner “Chuck” Stone, Jr. died April 6 of congestive heart failure at an assisted-living facility in North Carolina at the age of 89. Born in 1924 in St. Louis, he was a Tuskegee Airman in World War II. Then, instead of attending Harvard — who accepted him, he instead went to and graduated from Wesleyan University in 1948, and later earned his master’s from the University of Chicago. Donna Beatrice Sandberg (nee Beecham)

Donna B. Sandberg of Richfield, Minnesota passed away peacefully on March 25, 2014 at age 75. She is survived by loving husband Carl. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 11 am at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4343 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis. Linda Wylene Jules Adams, 81, sister and sister-in-law of Drs. Idalorraine and Frank B. Wilderson, Jr. and a resident of Minneapolis since the 2005 Hurricane Katrina, was buried in New Orleans on February 28, 2012, after services at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church. She died on Feb. 22 from a massive benign brain tumor at the Lafon Nursing Facility of the Holy Family Order, of which Frank’s aunt, Sister Miriam Joseph Wilderson, deceased, was the former Mother Superior. Margaret Dobbins Gaskins passed away on February 12, 2012. She was born March 13, 1927 to Cornelius and Elizabeth Dobbins in Marshalltown, Iowa, where she attended Morrow Chapel Methodist Church and graduated from Marshalltown Senior High School in 1946. She married Moses W. Carr and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she continued to live until her death. She was employed by General Service Administration, where she retired in 1988. Harriette Wilson was born in Chicago, IL on June 8, 1956. She moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1991, where she excelled personally and professionally, raising her five children while working as a professor teaching child development at St. Paul Technical College. She continued her education, earning her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. After relocating to North Carolina in 1999, having served as an instructor and department coordinator of Early Childhood Education at the College of Albermarle, Harriette moved back to Minneapolis and worked as a professor at Metropolitan State University.
