RECLAIMING LANGUAGE THROUGH FORM: A POET’S GUIDE with Chavonn Shen
There is no one path to writing poetry, and for many, poetry has historically been inaccessible. Often writing that is labeled poetry isn’t always reflective of the communities that read them. This class is meant to create conversations about ways people of color have been marginalized through formal writing and to rewrite the rules of what poetry is and who gets to write it. We will investigate poetic form by artists of color and critically discuss the ways they used form as an act of resistance.
WRITE WHERE YOU ARE: WRITING PERSONALLY VOICED NONFICTION with Emily Strasser
Our experiences change the way we see and understand the world, yet established literary conventions have enshrined certain viewpoints (usually white male) as universal and ideal, labeling everything else as genre or niche. Instead of shunning what makes us unique, and what makes our experiences differ from a false neutral, how can we embrace subjectivity in our writing?
