It’s that time of year again — get ready for blocked off streets, the scent of BBQ and sound of children’s at play. National Night Out (NNO), celebrated the first Tuesday in August, is upon us once again.
Residents are encouraged to head outdoors and mingle with other community members at block parties in an effort to increase neighborhood safety and spirit.
In addition to the idea that knowing your neighbors and surroundings helps prevent crime and suspicious activity, the event is also promoted as a way to improve police-community relations — both very timely issues.
As in previous years, in 2018 with 1,600 registered events, the Twin Cities placed high on the lists for most registered NNO events in the U.S.
Minneapolis came in second for most events for with a 300,000+ population. Not to be outdone, St. Paul took second place with a population between 100,000 — 300,000, according to the National Association of Town Watch.
