2014 All-Star Classic lineup

According to DEREK REUBEN, director of the Inner City All-Star Classic, the rosters are set for the annual boys’ and girls’ basketball contests featuring the metro area’s top seniors. Reuben, who was named the state’s Mr. Basketball after an outstanding career at Minneapolis North, started the boys’ game in 1994 with then-teammate and friend RALPH CROWDER. At the urging and persistence of the late community and sports activist KWAME MCDONALD, a girls’ game was added in 2001.

This year’s Inner City All-Star Classic will be held Sunday, June 8, at the University of St. Thomas. Continue Reading →

NLI signing day for top hoopsters

For former Minneapolis North boys’ basketball standout RICO ALEXANDER, November 12, 2013 was a very special day. It was also the fact that fellow AAU teammates KENISHA BELL (5’-8” guard, Bloomington Kennedy), CHASE COLEY (6’-3” forward, Minneapolis Washburn), TIA ELBERT (5’-7” guard, Tartan), TONOIA WADE (6’-1” forward, Bloomington Kennedy), and CAYLA MCMORRIS (6’-0 guard, Park Center) were also signing their NLIs. “I watched them develop into some fine ladies,” said Rico Alexander, who coached them in North Tartan’s AAU program. “I’m just so proud of them all.”

Bell, who signed with Marquette, averaged 12 points per game, leading Bloomington Kennedy to a runnerup Class 4A finish last spring. Continue Reading →

Class of 2014 top girl basketball players (some, not all)

Here are some of the top metro area girls’ basketball players from the Class of 2014. I am sure there are more out there, but as a writer I am willing to take that chance. CHASE COLEY, a 6’-3” forward from Minneapolis Washburn, quietly led the Millers to a fourth-place finish in the Class 2A state tournament. Fellow City Conference players are ALEXANDRA WASHINGTON, post from Edison, North’s KIEAR HUNTER, and NAJA WOODS of Minneapolis Southwest. Across the river in St. Continue Reading →
