Racketeering Bowl I — Vikings vs. Browns Sunday

Vikings lose again, this time a heartbreaker, 31-30 at Chicago last Sunday. Bears tight end Martellus Bennett grabbed the game-winning touchdown of 16 yards from quarterback Jay Cutler with 10 seconds left to push the Vikings into an 0-2 hole. No team that started 0-2 has made the playoffs in the NFL since 2007, so the Vikings had better get busy. Not only are the Vikings 0-2, they are 0-2 in the Division to Detroit and Chicago,

two teams that missed the playoffs and that they finished ahead of last year. Leading 30-24 and settling for a Blair Walsh field goal with three minutes left after failing to finish the Bears off, the Vikings allowed the Bears to march 66 yards right down their throat to win it with 10 seconds left. Now we’ll never know

GREEN BAY — The NFL’s most successful franchise, the 13-time World Champion Green Bay Packers, eliminated the Minnesota Vikings 24-10 Saturday before 71,548 fans and a national television audience on NBC at historic Lambeau Field. The Packers now advance to play San Francisco next Saturday in the Divisional round. The incredible 2,097-yard rushing potential MVP season of the great Adrian Peterson, for all intent and purpose, is now a footnote in history. Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers orchestrated the victory by going 23-33 for 274 yards and one touchdown. He used little running back DuJaun Harris, activated from the team’s development squad weeks ago, to keep the Vikings defense off balance. Continue Reading →

Vikings clinch playoffs, beat Packers 37-34

Yes, the Vikings are relevant again. They clinched the final NFC playoff spot Sunday by beating Green Bay 37-34 before 64,134 fans in one of the most electric, pressure-packed Viking games in franchise history. The great Adrian Peterson’s remarkable, incredible return from knee surgery fueled the Vikings’ return to the playoffs. Peterson came up just nine yards short (at 2,097) of breaking the all-time single-season rushing record of 2,105 set by Eric Dickerson in 1984. If you witnessed this game Sunday, you saw one of the greatest games in NFL history. Continue Reading →

Adrian Peterson powers Vikings 38-22 over Rams

For the third straight week, tragedy has again gripped our consciousness, this time away from the NFL — the horrific events in Connecticut on Friday. Sunday all across the NFL there were moments of silence and athletes and fans showing heartfelt expressions of sorrow for the senseless murders of the 26 victims.

The Vikings and Rams, before kickoff, gathered at midfield holding hands, with both head coaches and one player wearing the jersey number 26 representing the lives lost at the Sandy Hook school. President Barack Obama, speaking at a memorial service Sunday, said, “These tragedies must end, and to end them, we must change.”

The Vikings kept alive their Wild Card playoff hopes by dominating the St. Louis Rams 36-22. The Vikings improved to 8-6, and with two games left they have positioned themselves as the number-six seed in the rugged NFC. Continue Reading →

Vikings survive Jaguars 26-23 in overtime

Victory is so sweet, especially when you work hard, change your approach to everything you do, and things just work out. Sunday the Vikings were looking for a fresh start after a miserable 2011 season when they finished 3-13. Getting players to buy into what you’re doing takes positive results. For the Vikings, it started with winning at home and finding a way to somehow start turning this program around from the depths of the NFC North. Jacksonville, like the Vikings, finished last in their division in 2011, so they looked at the Vikings as a great opportunity to get a win. Continue Reading →
