Anderson, Webb, Okonkwo and January set state records



TAYLOR ANDERSON (Hopkins), PHILLIS WEBB (Osseo), ANULI OKONKWO (Osseo) and JESSICA JANUARY (Richfield) made a name for themselves last March at the girls’ state basketball tournament. 

Anderson, a point guard, led the Royals to their second consecutive Class 4A championship. Webb, a shooting guard, helped the Orioles place second in the Class 4A. Okonkwo, a guard, was a major contributor to Osseo’s success. January, also a point guard, led the Spartans to their first-ever appearance and a runner-up finish in Class 3A. The foursome made plenty of noise last weekend at the Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field Championships at Hamline University, each contributing a record-setting performance. Continue Reading →

Highland Park wins Twin City basketball championship



KIONDA NICKS scored 24 points, PARIS CRENSHAW added 14 and ASHALEE MORALES chipped in 13 to lead St. Paul Highland Park to a 67-63 victory over Minneapolis Roosevelt in the annual girls’ Twin City basketball championship. Roosevelt got 24 points from do-it-all junior guard TYANEKA CAGE. She was supported by

teammates BRENDA BROWN and BREEVANA BRITTAIN, who chipped in 12 apiece. Highland Park led 32-23 at halftime before the Teddies stormed back in the final minutes to tie the game. Nicks and BRIARA VIRNIG’s clutch freethrows sealed the victory for the Scots. Continue Reading →
