Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund, Year X does it again!

Amazing — we’re blessed to recognize that we have been given another day to try and get our lives straight. It really hits you when you look up and realize it’s been 11 years since April 10, 2003, the day Carol Fitzgerald died of breast cancer. This past weekend, the 10th annual Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund (CFMF) celebrated the legacy of Carol’s life with the benefit at the Metropolitan Ballroom Friday night in Golden Valley and the celebration of her life and work Saturday at Martin Luther King Center in Minneapolis. It’s not easy asking people you know and don’t know to trust you and help you with raising money and taking their time to benefit others. But that is what we are about with the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund. Continue Reading →

Larry Fitzgerald, Jr. named 2013 recipient of NFL Players Association Georgetown Lombardi Award

Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington and the NFL Players Association have selected Minneapolis native Larry Fitzgerald, Jr., Arizona Cardinals wide receiver, as the recipient of its annual joint award. Fitzgerald will receive the award during the 27th Annual Lombardi Gala on November 2 in Washington. The NFL Players Association Georgetown Lombardi Award was established to honor a leader in the sports industry whose life and family have been touched by cancer, and who encourages cancer research, prevention and treatment through awareness and philanthropy. Fitzgerald has been growing his trademark dreadlocks since he was a freshman in college in memory of his mother Carol, who passed away after a seven-year battle with breast cancer. To carry on his mother’s legacy, he helped establish the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund, which supports the causes that his mother held close to her heart, such as the education of urban youth on HIV/AIDS and breast cancer awareness. We did it again! — Ninth annual Carol Fitzgerald Fund announces grant winners

Ten years ago on April 10, 2003, we lost a great woman, Carol Fitzgerald. Thanks to great support from our community locally and nationally, we continue her work. With major spending cuts across the United States in funding the fight against HIV-AIDS and breast cancer and for urban education support, many voices are not being heard. Last Friday, April 12 at the Metropolitan Ballroom on a cold snowy evening in Golden Valley and Saturday, April 13 at Martin Luther King Park in Minneapolis, we carried on the mission to do our part with your continued help, through the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund (CFMF). Big Sy Huff was master of ceremonies; Hall-of-Famer Cris Carter, my sons All-Pro Larry Fitzgerald, Jr. and Marcus Fitzgerald, and yours truly spoke passionately about the work of Carol Fitzgerald. Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund does it again!

Jesus died for us, and Easter Sunday he rose again for our salvation. When you hold an event that’s important to you personally and schedule it on the holy weekend when families are together, it had better be for a great cause that benefits others. That’s what the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund (CFMF) is all about, helping other people you don’t even know. It’s so true: Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. Pardon my bias, but the Eighth Annual Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund Benefit & Community Celebration was a two-day event, and both days were a smashing success. Continue Reading →
