Noelle Scaggs from Fitz and The Tantrums talks touring, music and her three wishes

“I love the rush of performing on stage, and watching the emotional responses from the crowd,” says Noelle Scaggs the dynamic co-lead singer extraordinaire of Fitz and the Tantrums. “It’s always a great challenge for me to get the most stoic person in the room dancing and shouting towards the end of the show.”

Fitz and The Tantrums brought their “soul-influenced indie-pop,” to the metro area when they performed club Myth in Maple Grove November 21. The L.A. based band has created a name for themselves with soon-to-be pop classics from their second and most recent studio album, More Then Just a Dream, which was released in May of this year to critical and popular acclaim. The forming of the band, much like its sound, was from a place of impulse, synchronicity, fun and inspiration. Lead singer, Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick formed the band from friend and fellow musician Saxophonist James King, who recommended singer Scaggs and Drummer John Wicks. When Wicks brought in bassist Joseph Karnes and keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna to the clique of Fitz, the synchronicity was apparent and unstoppable. Continue Reading →

New food choices at Timberwolves games not for everyone


Fans looking for basic fare and affordable options might just be out of luck

The Minnesota Timberwolves has new concessions items this season. A first-ever sampling party was held October 23 for “a mix of media and season-ticket members,” including the MSR at the downtown Minneapolis arena. This reporter however did not taste any of the new food: a male worker seemingly didn’t understand me when I asked if a simple hamburger was available — he instead pointed me to the new 1/3-pound Bar-B-Que Burger topped with pork, barbecue sauce and onion crisp. A Black female worker also couldn’t convince me to try the new “Ball Hog,” a 1/2-pound kielbasa. “The kielbasa is good,” she insisted, but to no avail. Continue Reading →

Grants available to help HN County businesses ramp up recycling

Hennepin County is the first local government in Minnesota to offer grants to businesses to improve recycling. The business sector generates more than half of the total waste in Hennepin County, and nearly two-thirds of waste created at businesses is recyclable. Helping businesses improve their recycling is an important strategy toward meeting the county’s goal of recycling at least half of the waste generated in the county by 2015. Recycling grants are now available for up to $50,000 for businesses to start or improve programs to divert recyclables and organics (food and non-recyclable paper) from the trash. Most businesses and nonprofits in the county — from large office buildings to churches, restaurants and apartment buildings — are eligible to apply. Continue Reading →

The healing effect of cooking is in the hand of the preparer
