Nontraditional approach seeks workers already ‘connected to the Zone’

Lucretia Gill is a connector. She talks to families with children in North Minneapolis to determine their family’s goals, and then she connects them to the organizations that can address the challenges hindering them from reaching their goals. Last year, Gill was a personal care attendant (PCA). She now works for an organization that has added 42 new positions over the past year — 32 of them filled by Northsiders — to the North Minneapolis job market. Black Fashion History Day a great success

October 21, 2012, was declared “Black Fashion History Day” by Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. When the governor’s Proclamation was read by “fashion enthusiast” Roger Clark to the crowd gathered at the Capri Theater in North Minneapolis that Sunday evening, it brought down the house with thunderous applause. The event was historic, memorable, and enjoyed by all who attended. The emcee was Carol Payne, who also moderated the panel discussion with panelists Rozenia Hoodfuller, a former model; Jewelean Jackson, former director of the Ms. Black MN Pageant Inc.; Sylvia Loveless-Amos, who designed for the entertainers Prince, Jody Watley, and other noted musicians; and Charles Caldwell, a former model and now owner of C. Caldwell Fine Arts Gallery and Studio. The panel did an outstanding job of informing the audience of what the fashion scene was like during this period known as the “epicenter” of Black fashion in Minnesota. Continue Reading →

Harvest Prep’s finances are solid, its leadership strong

I am a parent of Best Academy students. I have more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, and I am the board chair of Harvest Preparatory School. You may be aware that on Saturday, August 25 reporter Steve Brandt of the Star Tribune wrote his fifth in a series of negative articles about Eric Mahmoud and Harvest Preparatory School (Harvest Prep). The only new news in Saturday’s article is that a Notice of Deficiency (Notice) was delivered from Harvest Prep’s authorizer, Audubon Center of the North Woods (ACNW), to Harvest Prep’s Board of Directors on Thursday, August 23, questioning the financial management of the school. I am writing to assure you that the school is well-managed, and to ensure that you have a few additional facts. The first thing you should know is that Harvest Prep went through an extensive and rigorous annual site visit by ACNW on February 12, 2012. Continue Reading →
