KAMMRON TAYLOR (Minneapolis North): The 6-2 guard, who led Minneapolis North to the 2003 Class 4A state boys’ basketball title before going on to star at the University of Wisconsin, is playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Hopkins, DeLaSalle and Maranatha Christian repeated as state champions at the girls’ basketball finals held at the Target Center last Saturday. Hopkins, led by SYNDEY COFFEY, NIA COFFEY, TAYLOR ANDERSON, TT STARKS, VIRA LIVINGSTON, GRACIA HUTSON and ERIN O’TOOLE, defeated Osseo 77-55 to capture its second consecutive Class 4A crown. Osseo got outstanding play from PHILLIS WEBB, OLIVIA ANTILLA, MIKAYLA BAILEY, JANAY MORTON, JILL VIEAU, ANULI OKONKWO and AYO PORTE. The exceptional play of ALLINA STARR, TYSEANNA JOHNSON, MIA LLOYD, MARIAH ADANENE, SAMANTHA DORNSBACH, CORI GARNER and TAYLOR TONEY helped DeLaSalle defeat Richfield 65-45 to win the Class 3A title. Richfield was led by JESSICA JANUARY, BRYANN GUYTON, SIERRA FORD WASHINGTON, HANNAH WISE and LEAH BARNES.
MADISON LEE, ALEXIS LONG and OYNE OSEMENAM led Maranatha Christian to their second consecutive Class 1A state crown by defeating Mountain Iron-Buhl 49-37. Continue Reading →
I took it easy this past week and watched five former metro-area prep basketball players help their college teams to key victories. Check this out! Sophomore center ROYCE WHITE (Hopkins), Mr. Basketball in 2009, had 18 points and nine rebounds in leading Iowa State to a 73-64 upset of fifth-ranked Kansas. Freshmen sensation RACHEL BANHAM (Lakeville North), named Miss Basketball in 2011, led the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team with 20 points in a 76-65 win over number-nine Ohio State. The year 2011, in the prep sports world, will be remembered for many outstanding accomplishments. Of those accomplishments, two stand out: The Hopkins girls basketball team, led by coach BRIAN COSGRIFF, capturing the Class 4A title, and DeLaSalle, coached by former Marshall-University High School and University of Wisconsin standout FAITH PATTERSON-JOHNSON, winning the Class 3A crown. Led by BRIANNA WILLIAMS, NIA COFFEY, SIDNEY COFFEY, EBONY LIVINGSTON, T’AIRE STARKS, GRACIA HUTSON, JULIA WIEMER and CHELSEY JACOX, Hopkins captured the championship by defeating Buffalo (79-62), White Bear Lake (52-34), and Eden Prairie (67-45).
DeLaSalle, who got outstanding play from TYSEANNA JOHNSON, MARIAH ADANENE, ALLINA STARR, and CHANEL DICKINSON, won their title by outscoring Rogers (47-23), Benilde-St. Margaret’s (55-46), and Hill Murray (63-43). Continue Reading →
