Central, Washburn keep winning championships

 

 

St. Paul Central captured its fifth-straight City Conference football title, and Minneapolis Washburn won its 11th consecutive crown last Friday. But that is only part of the story. Both teams are coached by former players who went on to play at the collegiate level and then chose to give back to their alma maters. Nine outstanding performances in prep football

 

There were several outstanding performances during the second week of the prep football season. Here are nine worth mentioning. JEFF JONES (Minneapolis Washburn) — The running back rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown in a 33-6 win over conference rival South. Prep football season begins

Page, Menifee lead Highland Park  to opener victory
 

The 2012 prep football season started off with a bang last Thursday as some of the state’s best mixed it up on the gridiron. TYCEL PAGE, a senior wide receiver who might be one of the best prep football players you never heard of, and junior running back MALIK MENIFEE paved the way in leading St. Paul Highland Park to a nonconference season-opening 41-10 victory over Jordan last Friday evening. Page caught touchdown passes of 32, 27 and 40 yards, and Menifee rushed for 119 yards and two scores for the Scots. Top prep prospects

University of Wisconsin-bound KEELON BROOKINS (Tartan) leads a talented list of top football prospects for the 2012 season. Brookins is ranked among the top corner back prospects in the country according to Scout Minnesota Preps.com. KIERRE RHODES (St. Paul Johnson), one of the state’s top all-purpose players, is being recruited as a corner back by several Division I schools. Boys’ state basketball tournament highlights

 

The 2012 state boys’ basketball tournament held at the Target Center last weekend will certainly be one to remember.  

 

There were two buzzer-beaters in the Class 3A and4A title games. City Conference teams from Minneapolis and St. Paul placed second and third respectively in Class 3A.
