According to DEREK REUBEN, director of the Inner City All-Star Classic, the rosters are set for the annual boys’ and girls’ basketball contests featuring the metro area’s top seniors. Reuben, who was named the state’s Mr. Basketball after an outstanding career at Minneapolis North, started the boys’ game in 1994 with then-teammate and friend RALPH CROWDER. At the urging and persistence of the late community and sports activist KWAME MCDONALD, a girls’ game was added in 2001.

It was quite the show at the boys’ basketball state tournament last weekend. Here are a few of the highlights:
Saturday, March 15
REID TRAVIS, JARVIS JOHNSON, GENO CRANDALL, SCAR ANIM and JAMES LAWSON led DeLaSalle to a 60-40 win over Austin to capture its third consecutive Class 3A championship. Travis, a McDonald’s All-American selection, led the way with 16 points, and Anim scored 13, including an alley-oop dunk to start. AJUDA NYWESH led Austin with 24 points. JP MACURA scored 43 points in a variety of ways, BRONSON BRUNEAU added 16, and DREW STEWART chipped in 10 to lead Lakeville North to an 84-82 victory over Hopkins for the Class 4A title. Minneapolis Washburn running back JEFF JONES, the senior who rushed for 4,668 yards and 92 touchdowns for his career, was recently named Mr. Football. Jones also helped the Millers’ boys’ basketball team capture second-place honors in the Class 3A state tournament in 2011 as a sophomore.
Hageman captures team honors
Former Washburn football and basketball star RA’SHADE HAGEMAN was a three-time award winner at the Gophers annual team football banquet. Hageman, a defensive lineman recruited as tight end while in high school, captured the Bronko Nagurski Award (MVP), the Carle Eller Award (Outstanding Defensive Player), and Defensive Player of the Year. Last Thursday evening, I had a choice to make. The top-rated team in Class 3A boys’ basketball, DeLaSalle, was scheduled to play Park Center, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A. Across the metro, a girls’ basketball matchup was scheduled between Robbinsdale Cooper, a Class 4A team among the top 20, and DeLaSalle, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. Continue Reading →
The 2012 state boys’ basketball tournament held at the Target Center last weekend will certainly be one to remember.
There were two buzzer-beaters in the Class 3A and4A title games. City Conference teams from Minneapolis and St. Paul placed second and third respectively in Class 3A.
