Exciting weekends on the prep sports scene

A person seen at a high school football playoff game a couple of weeks ago inadvertently became connected to a text message and his son’s recent success at the professional level. A football team continues to represent the Minneapolis City Conference in state competition. The only major Division I football program in the state continues its march towards greatness, and a former prep and collegiate volleyball standout, serving as an assistant coach, helps her team earn an NCAA Division III tournament berth. A special day at Robbinsdale Cooper as 14 players sign letters of intent

 

A couple of weeks ago, I got invited to witness the signing of Robbinsdale Cooper football player and defensive back MALIK RUCKER. The senior was to sign his letter of intent to play and further his education at the University of Iowa. The event was scheduled for 2:30 at the school. Though the invitation was flattering to say the least, my job as a social studies teacher at Johnson High School in St. Paul and a mini snow storm kept me from attending. Continue Reading →

Prep football season begins

Page, Menifee lead Highland Park  to opener victory
 

The 2012 prep football season started off with a bang last Thursday as some of the state’s best mixed it up on the gridiron. TYCEL PAGE, a senior wide receiver who might be one of the best prep football players you never heard of, and junior running back MALIK MENIFEE paved the way in leading St. Paul Highland Park to a nonconference season-opening 41-10 victory over Jordan last Friday evening. Page caught touchdown passes of 32, 27 and 40 yards, and Menifee rushed for 119 yards and two scores for the Scots. University of Wisconsin-bound KEELON BROOKINS (Tartan) leads a talented list of top football prospects for the 2012 season. Brookins is ranked among the top corner back prospects in the country according to Scout Minnesota Preps.com. KIERRE RHODES (St. Paul Johnson), one of the state’s top all-purpose players, is being recruited as a corner back by several Division I schools.
