Donna Brazile keynote speaker at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast

 

During the keynote address for the 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) breakfast on January 20, 2014 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Donna Brazile, a veteran political strategist, adjunct professor, author and syndicated columnist, talked about the greatness of Dr. King and his commitment to service beginning in his teenage years. Brazile told the MSR that she will no longer work any political campaigns because of her current role with the Democratic National Committee, where she serves as the vice chair of voter registration and participation.

It took a while, but V. Marcia Pruitt later this month finally will get her sheepskin. Pruitt, a St. Paul Central graduate, will receive her bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University during a December 17 fall commencement ceremony. Her journey is a testimonial to the value of formal education and the importance of taking advantage of available support along the way. “It was on my bucket list to do,” noted Pruitt, who graduates with magna cum laude honors. Most Mpls workforce hiring goals currently unmet

The City of Minneapolis’ workforce goals for construction projects involving City funds are 32 percent minority and six percent female. However, according to the latest monthly contract compliance report by the City’s Civil Rights Department, only two of 60 large construction projects have thus far met both goals. All others have thus far met one goal only or neither goal. For example, Shaw-Lundquist, which was awarded the $2.543 million Minneapolis Convention Center restroom remodeling project, shows only 15.86 percent minority and 4.95 percent female were hired. When asked why the company didn’t meet the stated goals, Project Manager John Myers responded, “I believe that we did.”

However, he pointed out that the job, which he said was completed in late January, mostly required electrical and plumbing work. Continue Reading →

‘Free money’ for down payments offers homebuyers a LIFT

Free money — that’s what NeighborhoodLIFT Program Manager Kimberly Smith-Moore calls $15,000 in down payment assistance that’s being offered to eligible homebuyers. The down payment assistance can be applied to a mortgage loan with any approved lender. The program is a partnership between Wells Fargo, NeighborWorks America, Neighborhood Housing Services in Minneapolis and Community Neighborhood Housing Services in St. Paul.
