Modeling agency offers positive images of women of color

“No one,” highly-skilled veteran actor Lisa Gay Hamilton (Honeydripper, Jackie Brown) told my MSR colleague Charles Hallman for an article on the scarcity of work for Black women, ”is making millions of dollars — maybe one or two…are but the rest of us are struggling to make it work. It’s an awful casting wheel that you would like to get off of. “I graduated from Julliard in 1989. Things have gotten worse since I graduated from school.”

Fact is, there’s more than one or two bagging the biggest paychecks. But, yes, it’s a short list — you’ve got Beyoncé, Halle Berry, Thandie Newton, Kerry Washington, Paula Patton — a lot shorter than the one for men, i.e. the likes of Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Forest Whitaker, Jamie Foxx, Will Smith and more. Multitalented JD Steele keeps pushing the creative envelope

JD Steele is, of course, even if you have been hiding under a rock, a household name in Twin Cities’ music and, by extension, theatre. For that matter, he’s internationally renowned along with his siblings as a vocalist-songsmith, arranger and producer for The Steeles. Still not ringing a bell? In case that rock you’ve been under is out in West Abu Dhabi somewhere, can you say, to name just a few titles, The Gospel at Colonus (yes, the film, TV and stage production featuring Morgan Freeman), Two Queens One Castle starring Jevetta Steele (Mixed Blood Theatre) and The Young and the Restless (CBS)? Why should I care about DPNs (face flesh moles)?

Dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN) is a unique skin condition seen primarily in persons of color. It appears as small, dark bumps and most commonly affects the forehead, cheeks, and neck. The bumps increase in size and number over time, initially appearing in people ages 20-30. Some people call them “flesh moles.” Bill Cosby, Morgan Freeman and Condoleezza Rice are notable people with the condition. It tends to occur slightly more frequently in women than in men.
