Highlights of a great state boys’ basketball tournament

The 101st boys’ basketball tournament was one to remember. TYUS JONES (Apple Valley), regarded by many as the nations’ top junior prospect, scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in leading the Eagles past Park Center, led by Mr. Basketball finalist QUINTON HOOKER (18 points, nine rebounds), 74-57 to capture their first Class 4A state championship. REID TRAVIS scored 17 points and LUKE SCOTT chipped in 12 as DeLaSalle repeated as Class 3A champs, defeating Austin 50-33. MARCELLUS HAZZARD scored 14 points in leading Minnehaha Academy past Litchfield 56-54 for the Class 2A title, a first for the Redhawks. Maranatha Christian earned runner-up honors in Class 1A, losing to Southwest Minnesota Christian 81-73, despite 24 points from ISAIAH HANSEN, 16 from JOSH GOLDSCHMIDT with a nice floor game, and 14 points from GARRISON GILLARD. Johnson defeats Southwest to win TC title

PEIRRE CONWELL scored 28 points, QUASHINGM SMITH-PUGH had 21, and KANTRELLE KIRK added 10, leading St. Paul Johnson to a 99-72 Twin City boys’ basketball victory over Minneapolis Southwest. The game was hosted by the Minneapolis City Conference champion Lakers (who share the crown with Washburn). Southwest got 20 points from senior guard DEMETRIUS CADY and 17 points each from CAM ROSS and EAMON BRODEK. The trip to the TC game was not easy for the St. Continue Reading →

Twin Cities boys’ crown up for grabs

At the present time, it’s anybody’s guess who will represent the Minneapolis and St. Paul City Conferences in the Twin Cities boys’ basketball game next month. While St. Paul is in a three-way tie with Highland Park (led by DION BRADLEY), St. Paul Central (led by MARKUS TAYLOR-KNIGHTEN), and defending champion Johnson (led by QUASHINGM SMITH-PUGH), each suffering one conference loss, the city’s counterpart across the river is in a similar situation. Check out the pics

With Johnson and Central playing for St. Paul City Conference bragging rights in boys’ basketball (at the time of this publication), here are some boys’ basketball pictures from this season and one from the past, along with the following descriptions:

Prep Scene: Faced with a tough choice, I opted for history

Last Thursday evening, I had a choice to make. The top-rated team in Class 3A boys’ basketball, DeLaSalle, was scheduled to play Park Center, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A. Across the metro, a girls’ basketball matchup was scheduled between Robbinsdale Cooper, a Class 4A team among the top 20, and DeLaSalle, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. Continue Reading →

Boys’ state basketball tournament highlights

The 2012 state boys’ basketball tournament held at the Target Center last weekend will certainly be one to remember.

There were two buzzer-beaters in the Class 3A and4A title games. City Conference teams from Minneapolis and St. Paul placed second and third respectively in Class 3A. A private school power in Minneapolis reemerged as 3A champs, and a new 4A champion was crowned for the first time in three years. Continue Reading →

Washburn and Johnson on target to meet again soon

Minneapolis Washburn and St. Paul Johnson put on quite a show in the Twin City boys’ basketball game two weeks ago. Washburn won in a 90-89 classic after senior forward JERRY PRATT converted his own missed layup as time expired. His putback helped the Millers offset a 30-point performance by Johnson senior guard MARCUS MARSHALL. If the two teams take care of business this week, they could end up seeing each other again in the Class 3A state tournament next week. Continue Reading →
