Defensively, Vikings load up in Draft

Mike Zimmer, first-year head coach of the Vikings, continues to build his first football team with a clear defense-comes-first approach. In free agency, the Vikings targeted the defensive side of the ball with 10 draft picks in the 2014 Draft, believed to be the strongest Draft ever from a talent standpoint. Zimmer and General Manager Rick Spielman took seven of 10 defensive players. They traded their number-eight first pick to Cleveland, giving up a fifth-round pick to take Cleveland’s ninth pick and draft big linebacker Anthony Barr. Barr is 6’-5” and 240 pounds and can run a 4.4-7 in the forty yard dash. Continue Reading →

Rooney Rule still looking like ‘Rooney Ruse’

“It’s duck season.”

“It’s rabbit season.”

“Duck season!”

“Rabbit season!”

Remember this cartoon debate? Well, both Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are wrong — it’s football coaches firing-hiring season. Or Black coaches getting bypassed again season. Even before it became official, the media de facto “search committee” already had filled out their next coach list for the Minnesota Vikings like a precocious child’s Christmas wish list. Two such lists include only four Black “top candidates,” with former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith listed twice. Continue Reading →

Leslie Frazier out as Vikings head coach!

“Enough,” said the Vikings. Head Coach Leslie Frazier has been fired by the Vikings after going 5-10-1 this season in a Division where 8-7-1 wins it. The Vikings are now again searching for a head coach. Frazier took over as head coach in 2010, replacing Brad Childress with six games to go. Frazier finished the 2010 season 3-3. Continue Reading →

NFL continues to score high in hiring diversity

Third in an occasional series

Historically, pro football has been slow to embrace racial diversity, especially at high-profile positions such as quarterback and coach. There was a nearly seven-decade gap between the hiring of Blacks as head coaches in the National Football League. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Blacks broke down the color barrier in playing quarterback, football’s central “thinking” position, but teams didn’t rush to undertake their deconstruction project in this regard. As a result, the NFL’s on-field diversity was slower to arrive than that of other pro leagues, but according to the 2012 Racial and Gender Report Card (RGRC), the league has scored its third consecutive high grade on racial hiring.
