Dr. Eric Kaler, president of the University of Minnesota, admits that he is aware of the Black community’s longtime skepticism toward the state’s land-grant university, an often strained relationship that did not improve when the university dropped the General College and made its “world-class” declaration in the late 1990s. U of M takes on Minnesota’s school achievement gap

Goal includes more teachers of color, more ‘partnering’

Last week, we spoke with the leadership of the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) initiative to reduce Minnesota’s achievement gap. However, we cannot discuss students and their families without focusing on schoolteachers. According to CEHD’s Dean Jean Quam, there are currently 31 percent students of color in the U of M teacher preparation programs. She is hopeful that a new partnership with Teach for America (TFA), which is currently being discussed, will change that number. “They have 38 percent students of color in their teacher corps. We want to work with them to increase that number and improve their teacher preparation program,” she said. Continue Reading →

Will loss of UROC visionary deter its mission?

N. Mpls center continues outreach as its founding leader moves on

Since discussions with community leaders were first initiated in 2005 and after its doors opened in 2009, the Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC) on Plymouth Avenue North in Minneapolis has been viewed suspiciously by community residents. UROC’s mission, “to build long-term, purposeful collaborations in and with North Minneapolis,” was a vision of school Senior Vice President Robert Jones, who will become president of the University of Albany (New York) in January. Now that Jones is leaving the school, what about UROC’s future? Marches honored legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

 

The traditional St. Paul MLK Day March began at 10 am in front of Central High School. Congressman Keith Ellison addressed the crowd of about 1,200 prior to the march. March leaders included Governor Mark Dayton, U.S. Senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, Congresswoman Betty McCollum and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. Continue Reading →
