Prep football is back!

The prep football season got off to a fast start last week with the defending St. Paul City and Minneapolis City Conference champions earning opening season victories.  

Gardner scores three times for the Minutemen

GARRETT GARDNER rushed for three touchdowns, quarterback SAM GUBBRUD hit DEVIN STAUNING for another score, and JAMAL GALATO also hit paydirt as St. Paul Central, the defending

Boys’ state tournament highlights






It was quite the show at the boys’ basketball state tournament last weekend. Here are a few of the highlights:


Saturday, March 15

REID TRAVIS, JARVIS JOHNSON, GENO CRANDALL, SCAR ANIM and JAMES LAWSON led DeLaSalle to a 60-40 win over Austin to capture its third consecutive Class 3A championship. Travis, a McDonald’s All-American selection, led the way with 16 points, and Anim scored 13, including an alley-oop dunk to start. AJUDA NYWESH led Austin with 24 points. JP MACURA scored 43 points in a variety of ways, BRONSON BRUNEAU added 16, and DREW STEWART chipped in 10 to lead Lakeville North to an 84-82 victory over Hopkins for the Class 4A title. Johnson defeats Central in St. Paul battle

JALEN MOBLEY scored 25 points to lead St. Paul Johnson, the No. 1 boys’ basketball team in Class 3A boys’ basketball, to a 75-67 hard-fought victory over archrival St. Paul Central last Friday evening (January 31). Johnson coming on strong — again

As usual, the favorites to contend for the St. Paul City boys’ basketball title are defending champion Johnson and rival St. Paul Central. (By press time, the teams had already met in the first of two contests.) Challenging them are Como Park and Highland Park; also competing are Harding, Humboldt and Washington with some outstanding players in their own right. Since 2004, Johnson, who prior to that had won their only City crown in 1983 (behind the outstanding play of WAYNE ELLIS, MONTE DEBERRY, SCOTT ACKERSON, CHRIS GARRETT, DARRIN CHAPMON, TONY ADKINS and COY NELSON), has owned the conference. A new era of North-Central rivalry?

At the conclusion of St. Paul Central’s 52-51 nonconference boys’ basketball victory over Minneapolis North, DEREK REUBEN and JURIAD HUGHES expressed excitement. “The rivalry is back,” said Reuben. “You know I had to come see this game,” said Hughes, smiling.
