Wiggins and Diggins: Tulsa’s new backcourt

The Tulsa Shock reconstituted its starting backcourt over the recent off-season. Like a musical duo, a guard tandem must develop a rhythm, an on-court synergy that the rest of the team can successfully follow. Over a course of a month or so, the Shock first acquired Candice Wiggins in a three-team trade in March, and then picked Skylar Diggins with the third overall pick in April’s draft. To date the two guards have started all but one game together this season. Each is averaging an identical 10.2 points and 1.4 steals per game, along with a combined seven assists per contest. Sports highlights, plus banished words of 2012

Two members of our MSR sports experts’ panel recently released their 2012 best sports stories. Nate Parham of Swish Appeal places at the top of his list the Indiana Fever winning the 2012 WNBA championship. “I think Tamika Catchings [the finals MVP] has done so much for women’s basketball…throughout her career. I think the entire women’s basketball world was rooting for her to win a championship. People are comparing it to LeBron James [winning his first NBA title this year].”

WNBA 2012 wrap-up

Only four times in 11 previous WNBA lotteries have the worst teams actually got the top pick. Therefore, if the lottery didn’t exist, the Tulsa Shock would’ve had the top overall pick the last two years. Some hinted that Phoenix, whose lottery ball came up first last week, might have lost a few more games in order to put themselves in a better position. As a result, once again the lottery bandits robbed the season’s worst team, Washington, of the right to draft first — the Mystics instead will draft fourth. No such “not playing hard” talk about Tulsa, who got the third draft slot and who might have been the league’s best nine-win club this season. Continue Reading →
