Anderson, Webb, Okonkwo and January set state records

 

 

TAYLOR ANDERSON (Hopkins), PHILLIS WEBB (Osseo), ANULI OKONKWO (Osseo) and JESSICA JANUARY (Richfield) made a name for themselves last March at the girls’ state basketball tournament. 

Anderson, a point guard, led the Royals to their second consecutive Class 4A championship. Webb, a shooting guard, helped the Orioles place second in the Class 4A. Okonkwo, a guard, was a major contributor to Osseo’s success. January, also a point guard, led the Spartans to their first-ever appearance and a runner-up finish in Class 3A. The foursome made plenty of noise last weekend at the Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field Championships at Hamline University, each contributing a record-setting performance. Continue Reading →

A memorable week in boys’ basketball

 

Last week I saw three boys’ basketball contests. Two went into overtime, and two teams served notice that the Minneapolis and St. Paul City Conference titles won’t be that easy to reclaim by the defending champs.

Forward WAYLAND JOHNSON II sent the game into overtime with a freethrow with two seconds left inregulation, while finishing with 30 points in a 66-65 loss to Eden Prairie. GRANT SHAEFFER and ANDRE WALLACE had 16 and 15 respectively for Eden Prairie. Continue Reading →

Highland Park defeats South

 

 

I was on my way to watch JOSEPH DOBY and DWIGHT ANDERSON help Minneapolis Washburn, coached by former St. Cloud State University player REGGIE PERKINS, to a 74-46 boys’ basketball nonconference victory over Hill Murray, led by former St. Agnes coach DICK GHIZONI. A little voice, however, told me to check out another nonconference matchup featuring St. Paul Highland Park at Minneapolis South for a half before venturing to the Washburn game in the second half.
