According to DEREK REUBEN, director of the Inner City All-Star Classic, the rosters are set for the annual boys’ and girls’ basketball contests featuring the metro area’s top seniors. Reuben, who was named the state’s Mr. Basketball after an outstanding career at Minneapolis North, started the boys’ game in 1994 with then-teammate and friend RALPH CROWDER. At the urging and persistence of the late community and sports activist KWAME MCDONALD, a girls’ game was added in 2001.

There was plenty of boys’ and girls’ basketball action last week as two boys’ basketball games were blowouts that turned into competitive contests, one contest was an upset, and the girls’ game between two metro area teams went into overtime.

Spring Lake Park, behind the outstanding play of DEVOTE SKREBES, TC ROBINSON and ERIC CURRAN, raced out to a 42-22 halftime, but COLTON WILLIAMS and sophomore JARRETT BATISE led a
strong COLUMBIA HEIGHTS comeback before losing the North Suburban Conference contest 67-60. Skrebes led Spring Lake Park, and all scorers, with 20 points. Last year in late December a friend of mine, former Minneapolis North and University of Minnesota women’s basketball player ELLEN HEBERT, suggested that I attend a boys’ basketball contest between Park Center and Osseo on Friday, January 6, 2011. I will admit I blew the invitation off at first. I live in St. Paul, and the thought of driving through traffic was enough for me to want to attend a game closer to my home.
