Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., the fifth-largest African American fraternity in the nation, has chartered its first chapter in the state of Minnesota. The chapter has been designated “Gamma Theta Omega, Twin Cities Alumni” and was formally awarded its charter on May 25, 2012. The charter group consisted of five Iota Phi Theta Alumni members located throughout the Twin Cities area.
The group immediately went to work and participated in the INROADS Learning Summit during the weekend of June 15. INROADS is an organization whose mission is to develop and place talented underserved youth in business and industry, and prepare them for corporate and community leadership. INROADS is the national community service initiative of Iota Phi Theta, and local chapters of the fraternity partner with INROADS throughout the nation.
The Polaris (president) of the newly chartered chapter, Dwayne Diggs, is also the regional training manager for INROADS and serves as chairman of the National Iota/INROADS partnership. Diggs served as the coordinator and manager for the learning summit, which brought over 180 INROADS interns to the Twin Cities for a weekend of seminars, presentations, and workshops. The Vice-Polaris of the chapter, Dwayne Dixon, served as a workshop facilitator, and all members of the chapter were present to meet and network with the summit attendees.
INROADS CEO Forrest Harper was also present and met with the chapter members. Harper said, “We are extremely pleased with the partnership with Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. Summits like this are where the rubber meets the road in delivering on our mission and we are excited to see Iota Phi Theta working with us to deliver real value to our interns.”
Other INROADS personnel involved with the summit included Javona Braxton, national director, Training & Development; Erica Richmond, Great Lakes Regional director; and the INROADS Great Lakes Regional staff. The Twin Cities summit was one of 11 that will be taking place throughout the nation over the next several weeks.
Founded in Baltimore at Morgan State University on September 19, 1963, Iota Phi Theta consists of over 230 chapters and over 30,000 members throughout the nation.
