For the sixth time in her remarkable career, at age 34 Serena Williams captures her third Grand Slam Championship of 2015. She defeated talented Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-4 6-4 in straight sets.
Williams has now won all three Grand Slam Majors in 2015 for the second time — the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. She has now captured her second career Serena Slam where she has won four consecutive Grand Slam titles in succession. (That’s the U.S. Open, Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon).
It’s incredible when you think about how talented and determined she is to win. She will head to New York City later this year with a chance to capture the calendar Grand Slam to win all four titles in the same year.
2015 is turning into a year for the ages with what Williams is doing. Also, in golf, Jordan Spieth has won the Masters and U.S. Open; this week he goes for his third Major, the Open Championship at historic St. Andrews. Remember that in horse racing, the Sport of Kings, we already have had American Pharaoh’s historic Triple Crown achievement.
Williams has a chance to do what last was achieved in 1988 by Steffi Graf if she wins the U.S. Open Championship. Williams has dominated women’s tennis since 1999 with 21 Grand Slam career wins over three separate decades. Graf has 22 career Grand Slam titles, the most all-time, and Williams can tie her and achieve the calendar Grand Slam also by winning the U.S. Open.
Williams is the unanimous number-one player in the world and has accepted the challenge to not only be the best but among the greatest of all time. She has overcome two surgeries in her career from foot lacerations. After surgery she developed a blood clot that reached her lung. It was dangerous, a pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal. But through her strong faith and good fortune, she has recovered and is strong and dominating again.
