The St. Paul Winter Carnival kicked off Jan. 26, carrying on its 130-plus years tradition of celebrating the history of St. Paul through winter fun and educational events and experiences.
With the goal of bringing “wisdom and goodwill” to the St. Paul Winter Carnival festivities, Shirlee Callender was selected as 2017 Queen of the Northlands Jan. 20, at the Senior Royalty Alumni Association’s (SRAA) coronation in St. Paul. The SRAA is the parent organization and sponsor of each year’s St. Paul Winter Carnival Senior Royalty Court.

As Queen of the Northlands, Callender’s duties include coordinating her court of four (King Winter the 79th Don Weinberger, Prime Minister Dan Monson, and Lady-in-Waiting Cindy Thrasher) to attend local functions, nursing homes, senior centers, selected schools and community festivals such as Rondo Days and Grand Old Days, to name a few.
