Former St. Paul Central volleyball great Jennifer Jacobs, in her first season as college coach, was in town last weekend leading her Augustana University team against defending NCAA Division II national champ Concordia University-St. Paul.
Following a 3-1 game match loss, Jacobs, who went on to Minnesota State University-Mankato after an outstanding prep career at Central, took a little time to talk about her love for the sport and how she got started.
“I was in eighth grade at [St. Paul] Murray Jr. High,” she said. “I was in gym class playing, and [volleyball coach] Kathleen Kramer saw me and talked me into playing for the team.”
The next year Kramer became the head coach at St. Paul Highland Park. Jacobs, of course, enrolled at Central.
“I ended up going to their [Highland Park’s] arch rival,” she said with a smile.
Jacobs starred at Central from 1996-99 and Minnesota State-Mankato from 2000-2003. She is the career leader in digs at MSU and second all-time in kills.
Johnson wins final regular season game
Terrence Nash rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns in leading St. Paul Johnson to a 27-7 regular season-ending victory over Minneapolis Washburn.
The victory capped off a 5-3 regular season record for the Governors, who also got outstanding performances from receiver Johnathan Sinkfield, defensive end Keylon Jackson and linebacker Chizaram Azonwu.
Robbinsdale Cooper finishes regular season
The outstanding play of quarterback Cameron King, running back Nascier Borden, receiver Pedro Amoussou, and linebackers Nate Hill and Onte Burns has propelled the Robbinsdale Cooper football team to an undefeated regular season with an 8-0 record.
The Hawks are ranked number nine in Class 5A.
