The annual National Farmer’s Market week will be celebrated in communities nationwide Aug. 4-10.
The celebration highlights the role farmers markets play in the nation’s food system and gives local markets the opportunity to showcase their contributions in the community.
This year, for the first time, the Minnesota Farmers Market Association, Minnesota Grown, and the Minnesota Farmers Union, are collectively sponsoring a large statewide kickoff event on Sunday, August 4 at the St. Paul Farmers’ Market in downtown St. Paul.
There will be a program from 10:30-11 am with brief remarks by agriculture representatives, elected officials and farmers, and competitions in which the guest speakers will compete against each other in farm-themed contests like corn shucking and veggie rolling.
Olympic athlete and Minnesota Grown spokesperson Carrie Tollefson will serve as emcee. There will also be contests and activities for all ages during Market hours, from 8 am to 1 pm.
Currently, there are more than 185 farmers markets across Minnesota. According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota ranks fifth in the nation in agricultural production, with $17 billion in agricultural sales per year.
