Over 70 cities in the U.S., including the Twin Cities, participated in protests on Saturday, January 4 demanding primarily that there be no war with Iran. They also demanded that the U.S. stop sending troops to Iraq and pull out of Iraq altogether.
The protests were motivated by escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran caused by the January 3 U.S. drone assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.
In Minneapolis, a spirited march of over 200 people took place on the West Bank. Meredith Aby with the Anti-War Committee, one of the organizers of the protest, said, “We have real problems here at home, and we should be spending these resources on dealing with homelessness, climate change, and education in this country.
“Instead we’re talking about, on the drop of a dime, to just pivot and spend billions and billions of dollars escalating a war in the Middle East. We need to be pulling these troops home and spending this money on human needs and not on war,” said Aby.
