This past week was busy as prep stars contributed to victories for the University of Minnesota men’s and women’s basketball teams, a high school boys’ team gets its first victory of the season, and the Timberwolves set a team scoring record.
Thursday, December 22
Sophomore forward Dawson Garcia (Prior Lake), junior forward Jamison Battle (DeLaSalle), freshman forward Joshua Ola-Joseph (Compass Prep/Osseo), and freshman guard Braden Carrington (Park Center) led the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s basketball team, led by former player and head coach Ben Johnson (DeLaSalle), to a 58-55 nonconference victory over Chicago State University at Williams Arena.
Garcia led the way with 18 points, Battle added 14, Ola-Joseph seven points including a dunk, and Carrington chipped in six.
Sophomore guard Wesley Cardet Jr.’s 17 points and 16 from senior backcourt mate Elijah Weaver led the Cougars.
Thursday, December 22
Freshman guard Amaya Battle (Hopkins) scored six of her nine points in the final period, helping the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team to a 59-48 nonconference victory over Eastern Illinois University at Williams Arena.
Former St. Cloud Apollo star Lariah Washington, a senior guard averaging 20 points per game, had nine for Eastern Illinois.
Tuesday, December 20
Guards Dhimani Tucker, Ka’Jon Jordan, Dewayne Givens, Jalani Mays, Michael Jett Jr. and Colin Moore Jr. helped St. Paul Johnson defeat St. Croix Prep 56-36 for the Governors’ first victory.
Monday, December 19
Guard Anthony Edwards scored 37 points, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 150-126 NBA victory over the Chicago Bulls.
The Timberwolves set a record for most points in a game.
