Book Launch: “Whiteness in Plain View: A History of Racial Exclusion in Minnesota”

April 9 @ 5:30 pm-7:30 pm

Free

Chad Montrie discusses his new book “Whiteness in Plain View” which examines the ways White residents in Minnesota intimidated controlled, removed, and kept out African Americans throughout the 1800s and 1900s. The book shows that Minnesota’s overwhelming Whiteness is neither accidental nor incidental, but in actuality, a legacy of racial exclusion that is woven into state’s contemporary politics, economy and culture. JoJo Bell, board president of the African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota, says Montrie’s book is “an earnest look at the subtle, insidious, and sometimes violent ways in which Minnesotans engaged in segregationist policies.” Montrie, a professor in the history department at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, will be available to sign copies of his book.

Event will be held at Hennepin History Museum, 2303 Third Ave S, Mpls. Tickets are free, but registration is required.
