Consider this dance-theater work a modern-day exposé of a 19th century pop culture celebrity: the Russian occultist Helena Blavatsky. She rose to fame as part of the Spiritualist movement of the 1870s and claimed her travels took her to Tibet where she trained in the “Ancient Wisdom” she then passed on to her Theosophy devotees.
We are let into this world through the letters-to-home penned by the Acolyte, a young upstart to the silkend matriarch. “Dearest Lita, it appears that in order to be truly liberated from one’s lower nature, one must first give into it completely. When I asked how this was to be achieved, I was shown a rather fascinating demonstration on the living room rug.”
What her letters – and this tongue-in-cheek drama – reveal is an idea as true today as 150 years ago: the charlatan leads because the fooled permit it.
