The Sounds of Gospel: An Anthology Depicting the Rich History and Evolution of Gospel Music
February 22 @ 7:00 pm-11:30 pm$12 – $27
Produced by well-known playwright, producer, director William Pierce of 2nd Chance Outreach and directed by Academy Award nominated vocalist, actor and playwright Jevetta Steele of the gospel singing family The Steeles, the musical chronicles the history of the genre. Concert sponsor 2nd Chance Outreach is bringing to the stage an all-star lineup of top-rated gospel music industry talent including Tonia Hughes-Kendrick, Cornisha Garmon, Geoff Jones, J. Michelle Caldwell, Fred Steele, Jr., Ashley Commodore, Jackson Hurst, Samia Butler, and Jermaine Thomas.
Organizers say Black History Month is a pivotal time to focus attention on oft-overlooked contributions by African Americans to America and its cultural landscape – and to explore the evolution and richness of gospel music. The story will come to life through dance, drama, instrumental and vocal music. Producer William Pierce says, “The audience will experience the rhythm from the shores of Africa, the moans and cries of slave work songs, the melodic sounds and tones of what we know as the ‘Dr. Watts hymn’. He continues, “They’ll hear the harmonies of quartets, learn choir origins, the upbeat sounds of what we refer to as ‘Praise and Worship Teams’, and today’s contemporary Gospel.”
