Protester stares down a cop at the police line in Brooklyn Center where hours earlier, police killed Daunte Wright.
Protests and civil unrest erupted following the Brooklyn Center police killing of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who was shot by police Sunday afternoon after a traffic stop. The police have said they were attempting to arrest Wright for having outstanding warrants.
After the shooting, a large crowd began to gather near the intersection of 63rd and Lee in Brooklyn Center. Despite pleas by activists on the scene to not allow their anger to detract from the attention needed to get justice for Wright, some young people attempted to smash police cars that were parked behind the police tape. One man was shot with what appeared to be some kind of projectile in either his head or neck and was rushed to the hospital by volunteer medics on the scene.
As the night wore on, there were reports of several stores being looted in Brooklyn Center and a few on Lake Street in Minneapolis.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott responded to the police killing in a statement that read: “Our entire community is filled with grief following today’s officer-involved shooting of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old young man.
“Our hearts are with his family, and with all those in our community impacted by this tragedy. While we await additional information from the BCA who is leading the investigation, we continue to ask that members of our community gathering do so peacefully, amid our calls for transparency and accountability.”
