Founder and publisher Cecil Newman’s connection to politician’s civil rights legacy
On Saturday, October 28, the Minnesota Historical Society hosted a program at the Minnesota History Center on Minnesota’s Hubert Humphrey featuring Samuel Freedman, author of “Into the Bright Sunshine: Young Hubert Humphrey and the Battle for Civil Rights,” and filmmaker Mick Caouette’s new documentary “Mayor Humphrey of Minneapolis: 1945-1948.” Both works highlight the relationship between Minneapolis mayor, Minnesota Senator and U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey and MSR Founder and Publisher Cecil Newman, how Newman helped shape Humphrey’s views on civil rights and movement for social change.
The afternoon started with a private lunch of approximately 20 guests, followed by a public discussion of the book and screening of the film, followed by a Q & A session with the author and filmmaker.
