Timberwolves advance to Western Conference finals after beating Nuggets in thrilling series

For the first time in 20 years, the Minnesota Timberwolves are headed to the Western Conference finals after defeating the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets 98-90, leading to a 4-3 series victory.

The Wolves won a dramatic seventh game 98-90 to advance.

Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against the Dallas Mavericks will be played at Target Center on Wednesday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m.

The Timberwolves, with players Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, Rudy Gobert, Mike Conley, Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Kyle Anderson, Jordan McLaughlin, Monte Morris, Wendell Moore Jr., Josh Minott, Leonard Miller, and Luka Garza all contributing, defeated a team with the Nuggets’ “Big Three” in three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon.

Here is a brief recap of each game.

Game 1: Minnesota 106  Denver 99 – Saturday, May 4, Ball Arena, Denver

Edwards exploded for a game-leading 43 points; Gobert grabbed 13 boards, and Conley added 14 points and 10 assists to lead the Wolves’ 32 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists led Denver. Minnesota led the series 1-0.

Game 2: Minnesota 106  Denver 80 – Saturday, April 20, Ball Arena, Denver

Towns’ 27 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists from Anderson led Minnesota. Gordon led the Nuggets with 20 points, and Jokic added 16 points, 16 rebounds, and eight assists. Minnesota led the series 2-0.

Game 3: Denver 117  Minnesota 90 – Friday, May 10, Target Center, Minneapolis

Jokie leads the way with 24 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists to lead Denver. Edwards scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Conley contributed 10 points and six assists for the Timberwolves. Minnesota led the series 2-1.

Game 4: Denver 115 Minnesota – Sunday, May 12, Target Center, Minneapolis

Jokic scored 35 points, Gordon added 27 points and seven rebounds, and Murray chipped in 19 points and eight assists for the Nuggets. Edwards got back to form with 44 points, Gobert had 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Conley scored 15 points and dished out nine assists to lead Minnesota. The series ties at 2-2.

Game 5: Denver 112 Minnesota 95 – Tuesday, May 14, Target Center, Minneapolis

Jokic led the way with 40 points and 13 assists, and Gordon added 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Nuggets. Towns led the Timberwolves with 23 points, Gobert had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Edwards also added 18 points, along with nine assists. Denver led the series 3-2.

Game 6: Minnesota 115  Denver 70 – Friday, May 17, Target Center, Minneapolis

Jokic led Denver with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Murray chipped in 10 points and five assists. Edwards finished with 27 points, Towns had 10 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists, and Gobert grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Minnesota. Series tied 3-3.

Game 7: Minnesota 98  Denver 90 – Sunday, May 19, Ball Arena, Denver

McDaniels led a comeback from a 20-point deficit in the second half with 23 points, Towns added 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Edwards finished with 16 points and seven assists for the Timberwolves. Murray led Denver with 35 points, and Jokic had 34 points and seven assists for the defending NBA champs. Minnesota wins the series 4-3.
