Exciting weekends on the prep sports scene

A person seen at a high school football playoff game a couple of weeks ago inadvertently became connected to a text message and his son’s recent success at the professional level. A football team continues to represent the Minneapolis City Conference in state competition. The only major Division I football program in the state continues its march towards greatness, and a former prep and collegiate volleyball standout, serving as an assistant coach, helps her team earn an NCAA Division III tournament berth. Only Ones on the volleyball court learn to live with being different

 

 

 

This column, over the past two weeks, has focused on the trials of being an Only One — the only African American — as a reporter in the media booth and as baseball players on the field. This week we conclude our Only One series with a look at club volleyball. It is almost mandatory that if a female athlete wants to someday play collegiate volleyball, club volleyball, from which college coaches primarily recruit, is a must. NCAA grant targets sports admin glass ceiling St. Paul native calls Augsburg job ‘a perfect fit’

Jennifer Jacobs is among the few Black females in the Twin Cities currently working in athletic administration. She is finding it “a perfect fit” for her. Jacobs, a St. Paul native, was named assistant director for compliance at Augsburg College in Minneapolis last summer as part of a two-year NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Grant program. The two-year grant is designated for Division III institutions to hire full-time interns. Continue Reading →
