Zsame serenades parents at Wenso Ashby’s CD release

The evening doesn’t get off to a promising start at Else Warehouse for pianist/producer/composer Wenso Ashby’s The Rebirth: Mind, Body & Soul release event and listening party. Not having seen Ashby in ages, I eagerly reach to shake his hand. He grabs mine and literally drags me back to the door — no hello, how’ve you been, nothing  — like he’s taking out the trash, sends me back downstairs to wait. No word how long, just go wait. When I am permitted entrance, at the bar a haughty hostess ignores me. Continue Reading →

‘Loving Yourself’ healthcare event an enlightening experience

It’s scary to find out you’ve not been taking proper care of yourself
Responsible, elegant, determined, intergenerational, promising, informative: These are a few adjectives to describe the “Loving Yourself” event held March 19 at Heritage Senior Center in North Minneapolis. The event was promoted as a Breast Cancer Awareness event for African and African American women sponsored by Neighborhood Healthsource and many other community participants such as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, UCare, Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, and the African American Breast Cancer Alliance. Approaching the venue, participants were greeted with the “Q”mmunity truck, a mobile health unit owned and operated by the Southside Community Health Services Inc. There was also a truck dedicated to providing mammography testing for women who were curious and willing. These health checkpoints were available to visitors before stepping into the “meat and potatoes” of the event. Participants were enthusiastically welcomed at an information table with personalized nametags, recyclable bags, and other small “thank you for coming” sponsorship items.

The main floor of the Heritage Senior Center houses a YMCA that is dedicated to helping those seniors who live in the residential space of Heritage and the local community. Continue Reading →

“Coming here tonight, I see so many great friends in the house who are here with us tonight…Without you there would be no us,” Pete Rhodes, the founder of the BMA Network, said at its first BMA Channel celebration held at the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant on Friday, December 21. This three-hour event, which Rhodes hosted, was free and open to the public. A first-of-its-kind event, it also served as the 25th anniversary of the BMA Network. Sponsors of the event included IPR, Comcast, and the Minnesota State Lottery. Technically speaking, BMA has been around for 28 years, but as far as formal annual celebrations go, the number 25 works. Wenso Ashby releases latest CD with classy listening party

Longtime collaborator Zsamé featured at party, on album

Wenso Ashby featuring Zsamé, premier Twin Cities neo-soul purveyors (Midnite Walkin’, Wenso Ashby Live and Love Is So Amazing) are in transition. Namely, on the newest offerings, The Moment of Truth and Signature, ace pianist-composer-producer Wenso Ashby goes solo. Sterling vocalist Zsamé Morgan and sax wizard Willie Moore put guest appearances on both with Morgan limited to two turns on each. There’s been no statement issued to the press, so, we’re left to guess what’s going on. Whether Morgan, a fixture for years, is simply on sort of a hiatus from the recording side of things or is being phased out altogether is unknown. Continue Reading →
