The COVID-19 pandemic has made everything challenging this year, especially learning. Attending class at bedroom desks and kitchen tables is not what many students envisioned for their school lives.
Distance learning can be challenging to maintain momentum, especially for those who may need some extra support. Scholar Squad, a free tutoring program powered by Reading Corps and Math Corps, is here to help.
Reading Corps and Math Corps have been offering research-driven, individualized support to Minnesota students since 2008. These evidence-based programs have been replicated in 12 states and Washington D.C. and have already helped more than 300,000 learners.
Students typically receive Reading Corps and Math Corps tutoring at school, but as the pandemic continues to disrupt classroom learning, new options were needed to support academic growth at home.
That’s where Scholar Squad comes in. “With the stressors of COVID-19, we know many families are seeking extra support for their learners,” said Alison Zellmer, associate director of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships. “Scholar Squad is here to help learners succeed at home.”
Offering free online tutoring for learners PreK-8th grade, Scholar Squad helps students build their reading and math skills.
To get started, parents go online to request a consultation. A literacy or math specialist will connect by phone to learn more and schedule a time to do a short screening. If the screening shows the child could use extra help boosting their skills, they are matched with a tutor for ongoing one-on-one practice and support. There is never a charge, and families can select a tutoring schedule that works for them.
While Scholar Squad is not a homework help, they are experts in helping kids improve their skills and confidence in reading or math.
If your student could use some extra support during the school year, you can find more information and request a consultation at scholarsquad.org.
