Two title fights headline the next Saturday night fight card at the Minneapolis Armory in June. The second nationally televised co-main event (on Showtime) this year at the downtown Minneapolis venue is scheduled for June 4.
Cuban native David Morrill, Jr. (6-0) who adopted the city as his hometown in 2019, will defend his WBA Super Middleweight title against Kalvin Henderson (15-1-1). Current WBC and WBO Super Bantamweight champ Stephen Fulton, Jr. (20-0) will fight former champion Danny Roman (29-3-1) on the same fight night.
All four fighters, along with Morrill’s English translator, held a May 10 virtual press conference, which the MSR attended.
Morrill said he is looking forward to fighting in his adopted hometown. “I love fighting in Minneapolis because I fought there three times and I’ve won there three times by knockout,” he noted. “I’m gonna come out there, do my job, give fans a show.”
“He’s no slouch. He has skills,” said Henderson of his opponent.
“This is absolutely the challenge for both Henderson and I,” added Morrill on fighting on the scheduled Showtime card. “This is the biggest possible platform that you can have to show the world what you’re capable of, and I plan to take full advantage of it.”
June 4 for Morrill will be a bittersweet date as well: “It’s going to be the fourth anniversary of me not being able to see my family,” he pointed out, due to his having defected.
The Fulton-Roman clash also is expected to be an exciting one, both fighters told reporters.
“That’s all boxing is about, showing what you already know to the rest of the world,” said Fulton.
Added Roman, “It’s a fight you got to see. Whoever makes the best adjustment is going to take that fight. You can say it could be like a chess game. I can do a little bit of everything. He [Fulton] could do a little bit of everything as well. So it all depends who makes that adjustment that night.”
“He’s a unified champion,” noted Roman of the unbeaten Fulton. “I know he’s gonna want to defend his belts.”
“I just expect this as a victory,” said Fulton.
