Bri Smith just made history. After five years at Modist Brewing Co. in Minneapolis, she has been promoted to Head Brewer—becoming the first known Black woman to hold the title in Minnesota and one of only a few nationwide.
Her brewing career began during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. With no prior experience, Smith started by delivering crowlers and pitching in wherever she could. What she lacked in credentials, she made up for in hustle, curiosity, and relentless work ethic. She earned her place in the brewhouse—and ultimately rose to lead it.
Based in the North Loop neighborhood, Modist Brewing has built a reputation for innovation since its launch in 2016. Known for bending the rules of traditional brewing, the company experiments with nontraditional grains, bold flavor combinations, and unexpected ingredients. Smith’s approach mirrors that same spirit—challenging convention and redefining what leadership looks like in the craft beer industry.
Her promotion is more than personal—it’s a significant moment for representation. The craft beer industry remains largely white and male, especially in leadership and technical roles. Smith’s rise is a milestone for visibility and a testament to persistence in a space not built for her.

“I didn’t get here because it was easy,” Smith has said in past interviews. “I got here because I showed up and did the work.”
Her journey is both a celebration and a call to action—a reminder of the progress being made, and how far the industry still has to go in creating inclusive, equitable spaces.
