On July 19, 2025, community members gathered at Toni Stone Field in St. Paul to celebrate Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield for his lifelong contributions to sports and service. The event was a powerful tribute to one of St. Paulโs greatest sons, recognizing not only his legendary athletic achievements but also his enduring impact on youth and community.
Captured by photographer Paul Robinson, these images reflect the pride, unity, and joy shared on this historic day as Mayor Melvin Carter announced a statue to be erected in Winfieldโs honor in the Hall of Fame Plaza. Statues of fellow local baseball legends Paul Molitor, Jack Morris, Joe Mauer, and Toni Stone will soon join the tribute, honoring the legacy of excellence from the Rondo community and beyond.
This gallery also stands as a reminder of a personal story told by Dr. Mitchell Palmer McDonald, who recalled a profound act of kindness shown by Winfield to a young journalist back in 1987โa moment of respect, integrity, and mentorship that has stayed with him to this day.
