St. Agnes student-athlete Ma’Lon McCoy

She might be the best kept secret in the state of Minnesota. There is a student athlete in St. Paul, part of a very accomplished family, who is quietly making a name for herself.

Ma’Lon McCoy, a student athlete at St. Agnes High School in St. Paul, has not only developed into one of the state’s best, but the junior is adding to her family legacy as well.

More on that legacy later.

As a member of the Aggies volleyball team, McCoy reached the 1,000 mark for career set assists. She is also one of the metro area’s top girls basketball players. In that sport the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

Her father, Marlon McCoy, an educator and basketball coach, teamed with Jahmai “Pancho Phipps, Char Davis, Lester Jackson, Craig Vaughn, Juan Taylor and Khamani Lloyd to lead the St. Agnes boys basketball team, coached by Hall of Fame coach Dick Ghzoni, to the Class A state championship in 1994.

Ma’Lon McCoy led the basketball team in scoring last season with a 16.2 points per game average. Her season-high was 26.

According to the Minnesota Volleyball Hub, she leads the team in set assists (560), second in digs (246), solo blocks (13) and total blocks (61), with Aggies sporting a 16-10 overall record.

Oh yeah, the family legacy. Ma’Lon McCoy is the latest of student athletes that have represented the McCoy/Pattain family.

Uncles Charles Pattain (St. Paul Mechanic Arts, 1975), Kevin Pattain (St. Paul Central, 1979), Terrell  Pattain (St. Paul Central, 1982), Derrell Pattain (St. Paul Central, 1982), and brother Marlon McCoy Jr. (Tartan, 2014) were all outstanding basketball players who all helped their teams make state tournament runs.

Ma’Lon McCoy, while excelling in two sports, continues to add to her family legacy while creating one of her own.
