Minneapolis South opened its season with authority, rolling past Cooper 91 to 41 and delivering an early message that this year’s Tigers are built differently. After a 7 and 9 finish last season, South looked faster, deeper, and far more connected. Cooper, coming off a 4 and 13 season, struggled to match the pace as South took control from the opening tip and never let it go.
Tigers Set the Tone Early
South’s pressure defense dictated the entire first half. The Tigers swarmed passing lanes, forced turnovers, and turned them into quick, clean buckets on the other end. The second quarter was the breaking point. South strung together multiple defensive stops and fast break finishes, building a lead that Cooper could not recover from.
Jamair Wright led the way with an explosive 25 points. He pushed the tempo, attacked the rim, and brought the energy that anchored South’s rhythm. Laviance Gales added 21 points, knocking down shots in key stretches and boosting the Tigers’ scoring punch.
Depth and Defense Carry South
South’s bench came in ready, extending the lead and maintaining defensive pressure. The Tigers stayed locked in through all four quarters, closing out the game with the same intensity they showed early.
This was not the team that spent last season rebuilding. This version of South looked confident, disciplined, and balanced. If the Tigers keep this level of play, they could emerge as a serious contender in the Minneapolis City Conference.
Cooper Looks to Regroup
Cooper showed effort throughout the night but struggled to keep up with South’s speed and physicality. The Hawks will look to tighten their rotations and establish more consistent offense as the season moves forward.
For South, a 50 point opening win is the kind of spark that can set the tone for the weeks ahead. With Wright and Gales leading the charge and strong support from the bench, the Tigers opened their season with a statement and a reminder of the potential they carry.
