As communities across Minnesota prepare to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the Twin Cities’ most meaningful traditions returns with an invitation grounded in care, connection, and action.

On Sunday, January 18, 2026, Sweet Potato Comfort Pie will host its 11th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday of Service at The Club at Golden Valley, welcoming up to 400 community members from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The free event brings together families, artists, volunteers, and civic partners for an afternoon shaped by food, storytelling, and service inspired by Dr. King’s vision of Beloved Community.

Honoring Dr. King Through Service, Community, and Comfort

Founded by community activist and baker Rose McGee, Sweet Potato Comfort Pie’s MLK Holiday of Service has grown from a small act of generosity into a beloved annual tradition. At its core is a belief that comfort, dignity, and shared responsibility are essential to building stronger communities.

The gathering centers the power of food as a pathway to deeper connection. Around shared tables, attendees engage in conversation, reflection, and collective care, transforming remembrance into lived practice.

What to Expect at the 2026 Holiday of Service

Every element of the program is designed to nourish the body, uplift the heart, and inspire action.

Highlights include live music celebrating the rhythm and spirit of community, along with the presentation of the Batter That Matters Awards, which recognize everyday changemakers whose quiet contributions strengthen neighborhoods. The Upholding Our Beloved Community Awards will honor individuals and organizations embodying Dr. King’s call to justice, compassion, and unity.

A defining feature of the gathering is its table conversations and pie recipient nominations. Each attendee is invited to help identify someone in their own community deserving of a Sweet Potato Comfort Pie, a symbolic gift of gratitude, comfort, and connection.

All guests will be served a comforting meal and sweet potato pie, reinforcing the event’s emphasis on hospitality and shared care.

Event Schedule

Doors open at 1:45 p.m., allowing time for arrival and connection. The program begins at 2 p.m. with music, awards, table conversations, and community reflection, and concludes around 4:30 p.m.

Stories That Stay With Us: Children’s Authors at MLK 2026

Storytelling remains a powerful tool for passing down wisdom and nurturing understanding across generations. This year’s Holiday of Service features two children’s authors whose work reflects the spirit of the day.

Families will be welcomed into a Book Stroll experience in the lobby upon arrival, offering an interactive space for curiosity and conversation.

Live readings include Shannon Gibney at 2:30 p.m., sharing We Miss You, George Floyd, and Keenan Jones at 3:30 p.m., reading Saturday Morning at the ’Shop, a celebration of everyday Black family traditions and shared joy.

Families are encouraged to arrive early and bring children of all ages. The experience is free and open to the community.

Community Baking and Volunteer Opportunities

In the days leading up to the event, Sweet Potato Comfort Pie will host group baking sessions on January 16 and 17 at Normandale Lutheran Church. Volunteers will come together to bake hundreds of pies that anchor the Holiday of Service and serve as tangible expressions of comfort and dignity.

Additional volunteers are also needed for pie delivery on January 18 and 19. Those interested in supporting the event through service are encouraged to sign up in advance.

PRISM Donation Drive

As part of its commitment to community care, Sweet Potato Comfort Pie is partnering with PRISM, a Golden Valley based food shelf supporting families with dignity and respect.

A PRISM donation van will be parked outside the venue during the event. Most needed items include flour, sugar, brown sugar, cooking oil, cereal, and canned proteins such as chicken, tuna, salmon, and sardines.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

The MLK Holiday of Service thrives through volunteers, community partners, and shared commitment. As Minnesota observes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Sweet Potato Comfort Pie’s gathering offers a reminder that honoring Dr. King’s legacy means showing up for one another, breaking bread together, and carrying care forward into everyday life.
