Southside Sports Hall of Fame Sabathani unveiling set for Black History Month
The Southside Sports Hall of Fame Sabathani unveiling will celebrate athletes, coaches and community leaders who shaped sports history in South Minneapolis.
The Sabathani Community Center will unveil its new Southside Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., marking a major addition to the center’s Living History Museum.
Held during Black History Month, the celebration will take place in the Sabathani gym and banquet room, honoring the athletes, coaches, teams, and community leaders whose contributions have shaped the legacy of sports in South Minneapolis.
Organizers describe the Hall of Fame as a permanent tribute to the power of athletics to build pride, opportunity, and connection across generations.
What to Expect
The unveiling event will include:
- The official introduction of the Southside Sports Hall of Fame display
- Community reflections and brief presentations highlighting South Minneapolis sports history
- Light bites provided by Events with Taste
- Music from DJ Enferno
- A 3-point contest with gift card prizes
The event is open to community members of all ages, including families, youth athletes, elders, and longtime sports supporters.
2026 Honorees
This year’s honorees, to be formally recognized during the program, include:
- Larry Fitzgerald Sr.
- Sankara Frazier
- Charles Hallman
- Al Nuness
- Bob Williams
The Southside Sports Hall of Fame honors African American individuals who have significantly impacted sports in South Minneapolis, along with individuals of any race whose work has meaningfully supported Black athletes, youth, or sports programs in the community.
The permanent display will be located on the second floor near the Sabathani gym, expanding the existing Living History Museum exhibit.
