On the Radar Host Damenica Ellis Highlights Black Creatives on City Cast Twin Cities
Damenica Ellis, host of On the Radar, joined City Cast Twin Cities to discuss the podcast’s mission of highlighting Black creatives and building community through storytelling.

Damenica Ellis, host of the On the Radar podcast at the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, recently joined City Cast Twin Cities to talk about the growing platform and its focus on elevating Black creatives across the Twin Cities.
During the conversation, Ellis shared how On the Radar was created as a multi-platform series designed to highlight artists across music, visual arts, literary arts and more. Each episode features in-depth interviews that explore not just the work, but the journey behind it. Through podcast conversations paired with written stories and video features, audiences get a full look at each creative’s process, inspiration and impact.
New episodes of On the Radar are released every Thursday, offering consistent visibility for artists whose work shapes culture and community identity across Minnesota. The series is intentional about creating space for storytelling that often goes overlooked, while also giving audiences practical ways to engage with local creatives, from attending performances to supporting their work directly.
Ellis also spoke about the importance of community involvement in the series. Artists featured on On the Radar are nominated by the public, and community members can vote on who they want to see highlighted. The platform is open to creatives across disciplines, including music, writing, visual arts, design and more, with a focus on those actively building and contributing to Minnesota’s creative landscape.
At its core, On the Radar is about connection. By centering Black artists, makers and storytellers, the series aims to inform, inspire and strengthen the creative ecosystem across the Twin Cities.
