Tracey Williams-Dillard, CEO and publisher of the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, participated in a speaker panel in New York City this week as part of the 2026 LMA Summit, where leaders from across the local news ecosystem gathered to discuss the future of community journalism.

Williams-Dillard joined other media leaders in a conversation focused on how news organizations report on immigration enforcement actions and protests, including the challenges of covering U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity and demonstrations connected to those actions.

The invite-only summit brings together members of the Local Media Association and the Local Media Foundation, along with participants in several national journalism initiatives.

The event began with LMA and LMF board meetings and a leadership dinner before broader programming launched at Googleโ€™s New York offices. Attendees participated in sessions focused on innovation, audience insights and emerging technologies shaping the future of local news organizations.

Conversations about press freedom and election coverage

General sessions during the summit include discussions on protecting press freedom and preparing newsrooms for coverage of the 2026 midterm elections. These conversations highlight the evolving role of local journalism in informing communities during moments of political and social tension.

Leaders also gathered for strategy meetings connected to several collaborative journalism initiatives supported by LMA, including Word In Black, BloomLab, LatidoBeat and FIMS Lab.

These sessions allow participating news organizations to share lessons learned and develop collaborative strategies that strengthen local journalism nationwide.

Elevating the Black press voice

Williams-Dillardโ€™s participation highlights the continued leadership of the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder in national conversations about press freedom, community reporting and the role of the Black press in covering issues that directly impact local communities.

The summit continues throughout the week with additional discussions, cohort meetings and strategy sessions focused on the future of local news.
