The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder continues its On the Radar podcast series with a new episode featuring Twin Cities dancer and founder Imani Moore. Hosted by MSR journalist Damenica Ellis, the episode highlights Mooreโs journey in dance and her vision for building inclusive creative spaces.
Moore is the founder of Locomotive Dance Crew, a group she launched in 2022 to create a welcoming environment for dancers of all backgrounds and experience levels. What began as a lifelong passion has grown into a community-centered movement focused on connection, expression and growth.
Creating space through movement
Inspired early on by family support and artists like Ciara, Moore developed a strong foundation in dance through training in ballet and continued to build her skills across multiple styles.
Through Locomotive Dance Crew, she has created opportunities for dancers to perform, collaborate and develop their craft. The groupโs work spans K-pop, hip-hop and open-style choreography, with performances across the Twin Cities, including appearances at community festivals and venues like the Mall of America.
Moore said the goal has always been to create a space where anyone can show up, move and feel a sense of belonging.
Building community beyond performance
In addition to performances, Locomotive Dance Crew hosts an annual showcase each December, inviting other dance groups to participate and creating a space for collaboration during the winter months.
Mooreโs long-term vision extends beyond performances. She hopes to one day open a dedicated studio space that can serve as both a training hub and a community resource, with affordable dance opportunities for young people across the Twin Cities.
Her plans include developing a nonprofit model that allows dancers to learn, grow and access creative spaces without financial barriers.
A vision for growth and impact
As she continues to build the organization, Moore is focused on strengthening both her personal craft and the long-term sustainability of Locomotive Dance Crew. Her goals include expanding the groupโs visibility, creating more opportunities for dancers and ensuring the organization can continue to grow into the future.
At its core, her work is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: dance is a universal language that allows people to express themselves, connect with others and feel at home in their own bodies.
The latest episode of On the Radar offers a closer look at Mooreโs journey, her inspiration and her vision for building community through movement.
