The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder continues its new On the Radar podcast series with Episode 2, featuring South Minneapolis poet and emcee Se’Anna Johnson. The episode is hosted by MSR journalist Damenica Ellis and highlights Johnson’s artistic journey and community-centered work.
Johnson is known for blending hip-hop, poetry and storytelling to explore themes of healing, identity and community empowerment. Her work often centers on amplifying voices and experiences that are frequently overlooked while using art as a pathway for reflection and dialogue.
A South Minneapolis native, Johnson began writing poetry as a teenager and later expanded her creative work into performance, music and community engagement. Over time, she has combined her artistic background with her academic training in sociology to create programs and initiatives that connect art with education and community development.
Johnson is also the founder of Beyond Da Mic, a movement that encourages literacy and self-expression through hip-hop and poetry. Through workshops and collaborations with schools, nonprofits and youth programs, the initiative introduces creative writing as a tool for storytelling, communication and personal growth.
Alongside her community work, Johnson continues to develop her own music and spoken word projects. Her first studio album, No Vacancy, is scheduled for release on March 23 and reflects her evolving artistic voice.
The On the Radar podcast spotlights artists, entrepreneurs and community leaders making an impact across Minnesota. Episode 2 offers listeners an opportunity to learn more about Johnson’s creative path and the ways she uses art to support healing, connection and cultural expression.
